About

Why WATAKA?

We started Wataka out of love for Africa — a continent that, against every hardship, produces unrivalled creativity and beauty. And why socks? Because everyone needs them, and even the least flamboyant among us can use a flash of colour to say who they are.

🌍 #AfricanMade

  • Inspired by Africa — every design is an original, inspired by African textiles, art, and story
  • For Africa — supporting South African manufacturing, and including support for 9 Miles Project when possible
  • Made in Africa — knitted locally in Cape Town, with local materials wherever possible

🇿🇦 Why Local Manufacturing Matters
South Africa has a rich textile history, but many of those skills are fading under pressure from cheap imports. Manufacturing here keeps that knowledge alive, creates real jobs and training at the factory, cuts transport emissions, and keeps the economic benefit where the inspiration came from. Reciprocity, not just pride.

🤝 Partnering with 9 Miles Project
A grassroots non-profit in Strandfontein empowering coastal youth through surfing, mentorship, and education — helping them find belonging and a brighter future.
